Weight Units

• Kilogram (kg) is the metric measurement of mass or weight used in most of the world.

  • 1000 grams (g) = 1 kg
  • 1000 kg = 1 Tonne (t)
  • 1kg ~ 2.2 pounds (lb)

• Pounds (lb) is an imperial measurement of mass used in the US and informally in some other countries such as the UK.

  • In the US a persons weight is usually refered to in Pounds, whilst in the UK its customary to use Stones and Pounds, most of the rest of the world use Kilograms
  • Pound usually refers to the “avoirdupois pound” but the “troy pound” is also in common use to express the mass of precious metals such as gold and silver
  • 1 lb ~ 453.6 g whilst 1 troy pound ~ 373 g
  • In the UK the Ton (aka Imperial Ton or Long Ton) is 2240 lb (1016 kg) whilst In the US the Ton (aka Short Ton) is 2000 lb (907 kg).

• Ounce (oz) is an imperial measurement of mass used in the US and informally in some other countries such as the UK.

  • There are 16 Ounces to a Pound
  • Ounce usually refers to the “avoirdupois ounce” but the “troy ounce” is also in common use to express the mass of precious metals such as gold and silver
  • 1 lb ~ 28.35 g whilst 1 troy ounce ~ 31.1 g
  • A Fluid Ounce (lf oz) is a unit of volume and is a slightly different size in the US and the UK

• Stones (st) is an British and imperial unit of weight commonly used for weighing people.

  • 1 Stone = 14 pounds or 6.35kg
  • A weight of 175 lb in the US would normally be refered to as 12 st 7 oz in the UK
    (175/14 = 12.5 st = 12 st 7 oz)
